“Mia and Ethan! Get up here!”
“Uh-oh, now you did it.” Mia said to Ethan.
“You’re the dork that hit the policeman.” Mia said as they moved up the stairs arguing the whole way about who did what when to whom.
“Stop it!” said their dad. “I don’t want to hear about whose fault whatever was. The bottom line is that you two were snooping around, right?”
“Well, she was. . .”
“Stop it! Just answer the question: were you guys snooping around Ben’s house?”
“Yes,” Ethan said looking at the floor. Mia nodded her head in agreement.
“Why? I mean, what were you going to accomplish with that? There are potentially some bad things happening over there. You don’t need to be dorking around over there.”
“Sorry,” said Ethan.
“Anyway, I’m sure you guys were listening to the conversation. Ben is fine. So, relax.”
Ethan and Mia took the first opportunity to leave the room. “Dude, you should send that picture to Abby and tell her Ben was in the police car.” Ethan said.
“It wasn’t even him.”
“Oh yeah. Bummer. Man, this was going to be so awesome, and now all I got were two bee stings and a lecture.”
Later that night, Abby came home and there was much discussion about the events of the day. Mia even showed her the picture of the police car with the Ben-like figure in the back seat. “That’s awesome, I’m going to send that to Ben,” Abby said.
“So, Ben is fine?” asked Abby’s mom.
“Yeah, I mean the whole thing has been weird. They knew there were bad things going on there since they moved in. He thinks this will calm things down for a little bit. Several of the people in the other apartment are going to jail, so they hope things will calm down anyway.”
“Well, that’s good. That has to be miserable to live next to that kind of thing,” said her mom.
“But even if there is trouble there again, at least we have Ethan and Mia to investigate it,” said their dad.
“Yeah, maybe blurry pictures will come in handy in court,” said Abby.
