My Brain on the Internet–More Planets, Eric Hoffer, Trump and Peale, And Dust in the Wind

Some things that went through my brain yesterday, May 11, 2016:

NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope has discovered 1,284 new planets. At the same time as this news was being broken, Hillary Clinton announced that if she were elected president she would reveal all the government files on UFO’s. The increased number of known planets makes people think there is an increased chance of life “out there.” Some ask–why would God make all that universe and only have one planet with intelligent life? Others ask–how did the Big Bang result in all that? I ask–didn’t NASA go out of business?

They who lack talent expect things to happen without effort. They ascribe failure to a lack of inspiration or ability, or to misfortune, rather than to insufficient application. At the core of every true talent there is an awareness of the difficulties inherent in any achievement, and the confidence that by persistence and patience something worthwhile will be realized. Thus talent is a species of vigor.
–Eric Hoffer

Donald Trump’s mom and dad attended Marble Collegiate Church, pastored by Norman Vincent Peale, author of The Power of Positive Thinking. Peale was one of the original popularizers of the modern Christian self-help movement, which is more mind games than Gospel. However, Peale’s work lives on in Trump’s manner of living and doing business. This is Mr. Trump’s conception of Christianity and largely the basis of his conception of himself.
